Inmitten des städtischen Gefüges von Kirchdorf an der Krems entsteht auf einem bestehenden Dach ein privater Rückzugsort der besonderen Art. Die Neugestaltung geht achtsam mit dem Bestand um: Was bereits vorhanden ist, wird nicht verdrängt, sondern behutsam weitergedacht – in seiner Substanz respektiert, in seiner Qualität gestärkt.
Der Blick auf Burg Altpernstein ist das unverhandelbare Geschenk dieses Ortes. Die gesamte Gestaltung ordnet sich ihm unter – Brüstungen, Pflanzflächen und Sitzelemente werden so gesetzt, dass die Silhouette der Burg im Grünen stets präsent bleibt: als ruhiger Fluchtpunkt, als historische Tiefe, als tägliche Erinnerung daran, wie lange dieser Ort schon bewohnt wird.
Holz und Cortenstahl bilden das materielle Fundament der Gestaltung. Zwei Werkstoffe, die auf unterschiedliche Weise altern und dabei schöner werden – das warme, lebendige Holz, der ruhige, oxidierte Stahl. Gemeinsam vermitteln sie zwischen der städtischen Umgebung und der Naturlandschaft, die sich am Horizont abzeichnet. Im urbanen Kontext wirken sie geerdet, unaufdringlich, zeitlos.
Bepflanzung und Struktur schaffen Intimität ohne Enge – geschützte Bereiche zum Verweilen, offene Zonen, die den Blick freigeben. Der Dachgarten wird zur privaten Welt über den Dächern der Stadt: ein Zimmer ohne Decke, ein Garten ohne Boden.
Amid the urban fabric of Kirchdorf an der Krems, a private retreat of a special kind emerges on an existing roof. The redesign deals attentively with the existing fabric: what is already there is not displaced but carefully thought onward — respected in its substance, strengthened in its quality.The view of Burg Altpernstein is the non-negotiable gift of this place. The entire design subordinates itself to it — parapets, planting areas, and seating elements are positioned so that the castle's silhouette amid the greenery remains ever present: as a quiet vanishing point, as historical depth, as a daily reminder of how long this place has already been inhabited.Wood and Corten steel form the material foundation of the design. Two materials that age in different ways and become more beautiful in doing so — the warm, living wood; the calm, oxidised steel. Together they mediate between the urban surroundings and the natural landscape that takes shape on the horizon. In the urban context, they appear grounded, unobtrusive, timeless.Planting and structure create intimacy without confinement — sheltered areas to linger, open zones that release the view. The roof garden becomes a private world above the rooftops of the city: a room without a ceiling, a garden without a ground.
